Jack Healey’s Blog May 2nd, 2017

Did research on that Red Sox comeback that I mentioned in my blog yesterday that I listened to on the radio in the early 60’s. I was fairly close, but not 100%.

The games were on June 18th, 1961 and the Red Sox and Washington Senators actually had better records than I recalled. Sox were 31-30 and Washington was 30-33. In game 1 of the doubleheader Washington scored 5 in the top of the 9th to go up 12-5. The Red Sox scored 8 in the last of the 9th to win 13-12. I thought they tied it and then won in the 10th. They actually won the 2nd game of the doubleheader 6-5 in 10 innings. In Game 1 Jim Pagliaroni hit a grand slam in the 9th, but Russ Nixon did win it with an RBI base hit. I thought Nixon also won game 2, but Jim Pagliaroni hit a 9th inning home run in the last of the 10th to win it. I did recall it, but didn’t remember all the details.

I actually listened to the whole doubleheader on the radio including when they were losing 12-5 in the 9th inning of game 1. I guess I was really more of a fan back then!
