High School Football: Hornets Earn First Win, Shutout Colchester 20-0

ESSEX JUNCTION — Jack Carney scored two touchdowns and Jordan Hines earned player of the game laurels with his running and punting, and the Essex Hornets picked up their first win of the season on Friday night, shutting out the Colchester Lakers 20-0 on the Essex Field.

After Colchester took the game’s opening kickoff and drove deep into Essex territory only to turn the ball over on downs, Essex mounted a 77 yard drive of their own, led by the running of Hines. The drive culminated in a two yard run by quarterback Cam Quinn, who followed Hines into the end zone for a 6-0 Essex lead.

It stayed that way until midway in the 3rd quarter when Carney picked off a CHS pass and returned it 25 yards to the house for a 12-0 Hornets lead.

Colchester tried to break through on their next series, with tight end Stephen Emmons hauling in a 60 yard pass to set up a first and goal at the Essex 5 . But the Essex defense, which was stellar all night held and the Hornets maintained their lead.

Hines kept the Lakers backed up deep in their own territory with a series of great punts and Carney finished off the scoring with a five yard TD run with 3:17 left in the game.

The win is Essex’s first of the season. They are 1-5. Colchester slips to 2-4.
