Girl’s Hoops: Redhawks Head Back to Patrick, Top BFA 46-37

HINESBURG — The five time defending champion CVU Redhawks booked their eighth straight trip to the VPA state semi-finals at the Patrick Gym o n Friday night, topping the BFA St. Albans Comets 46-37 in Northfield Savings Bank Rivalry Series quarterfinal action at the CVU Gym.

The Redhawks came out the gate quickly, jumping out to a quick 9-2 lead and leaving the court after the first eight minutes up 12-6. But the Comets took over the game in the second quarter. Paced by Maren McGinn’s six points they went on a 10-0 run to open a four point lead at 16-12. Held scoreless for the first seven minutes of the quarter CVU found their offense in the final minutes and baskets by Lindsey Albertelli and Catherine Gilwee in the final minute got them back even at 16-16 at halftime.

That momentum carried into the third as the’Hawks outscored BFA 14-4 to take over the game. The home team opened as much as a 16 point lead in the fourth before cruising home to the win.

Gilwee led the winners with 12 points, ten of them in the fourth quarter, including seven of eight from the foul line. Shannon Loiseau added 11,and Harper Mead chipped in eight. Kelly Laggis led BFA with 15 points while McGinn finished with 10.

Now 20-2 on the year the second seeded Redhawks will meet either Brattleboro or North Country in the semi-finals on Wednesday night. BFA ends their season at 13-9.
