High School Hockey: Gibbs and Cram Lead Essex Past CVU, 6-0

SOUTH BURLINGTON — Sam Gibbs and Grady Cram each netted a pair of goals as the Essex Hornets roared past the CVU Redhawks 6-0 in Northfield Savings Bank Rivalry Series action on Saturday afternoon inside Cairns Arena.

Essex jumped off to an early lead with three goals in a four minute and fifty second span midway through the first period. Ryan Young scored first, finishing off an end to end rush with a low shot past CVU goaltender Jake Kindestin at 7:08. Gibbs then tipped home a point shot by Nathan Theriault on an Essex powerplay at 9:17 and Young’s faceoff win set up Ian Amaliksen’s point shot blast at 11:58 for a 3-0 advantage after one. The Hornets outshot the Redhawks in the period 13-3.

The visitors stretched their lead in the second as Cram set up Gibbs for his second of the day at 7:44 and Jonah Janaro fed Cram wide open in the goal mouth for his first at on a powerplay at 10:41.

Cram then finished the scoring with a short handed goal at 3:02 of the third.

Essex outshot CVU 36-18 for the day and Sam Foster recording 18 saves for the shutout. Kindestin stopped 30 of 36 Hornets shot in suffering the defeat. With the win Essex improves to 3-1. CVU slips to 3-3.

The rivalry series continues on Wednesday night with Essex hosting BFA-St.Albans in a Girls/Boys Hockey doubleheader at the Essex rink.
