Girl’s Hoops: Rice Knocks Off CVU 47-29

SOUTH BURLINGTON — The Rice Green Knights vaulted out to a 14 point halftime lead and went on the top the five time defending state champion CVU Redhawks 47-29 in Northfield Savings Bank Rivalry Series action on Saturday afternoon on Bernie Cieplicki Court.

The Green Knights used ten first quarter points from Lizzie Lyman to grab a 12-7 lead after one, then outscored the Redhawks 11-2 over the second eight minutes to open a fourteen point lead at 23-9 at halftime.

The lead would build to 18 at 27-9 midway in the third quarter before CVU went on an 8-0 run to move within ten at 27-17 after three. But Rice came out with an 8-1 run of their own to open the fourth and took lead out to as many as 23 before easing home to the 18 point win.

Lyman led the winners with 17 points while Lisa Sulejmani added 10 and Kristen Varin and Maddy McElroy each chipped in eight. Shannon Loiseau was CVU’s high scorer with seven.

The win runs Rice’s record to 13-5. CVU, top seeded in Division One coming into the game, saw their record fall to 16-2.
