Girl’s Hockey: Essex and Missisquoi Earn Championships at Gutterson

BURLINGTON — The Essex Hornets and the Missisquoi Thunderbirds rang down the curtain of the Vermont High School Hockey Season with championship wins on Thursday night inside the Gutterson Fieldhouse. Second seeded Essex claimed the Division One crown with a 2-0 win over the top seeded BFA-St.Albans Comets, while number seven MVU topped number eight Woodstock 3-1.

In beating BFA, Essex became the first team to score two goals in a game on the Comets all season. Essex scored first at 10:28 of the second period when Abigail Robbins buried a centering pass from Maddy Young. Then in the third period Hannah Himes fired a shot from the slot for the second Essex goal. Hornets goaltender Sophia Forcier made the two markers stand up with 15 saves for the shutout win.

Earlier Missisquoi got two goals from Callie Parks in their win over Woodstock. Brianna Parent had the other goal for the T-Birds and goaltender Madison Conley recorded 18 saves to backstop the win. Alessandra Cimis had a second period short handed goal for Woodstock.

Their win gave Essex their seventh girl’s state title. They ended the season at 20-2-1. The loss, their first since opening night back in December. left BFA also at 20-2-1.

Missisquoi earned their second state title and their first since 2008. They ended the year at 10-14. Woodstock, which came up short in pursuit of their first ever state title ended the year at 8-13-3.
