BURLINGTON – Madison Hutchinson had a goal and an assist as the ninth-ranked Bemidji State Beavers used two first period goals to defeat Vermont 2-1 Friday evening at Gutterson Fieldhouse in non-conference action.

The Beavers took an early lead on the power play 6:13 into the first period. Hutchinson slid a pass at the point over to Emma Terres who one-timed a slap shot past Vermont’s Madison Litchfield for her first goal of the season. Hanna Moher picked up her team leading fourth point of the season with the secondary assist.

Hutchinson scored her first goal of the season with 35 seconds left in the first period to give Bemidji State a two-goal lead after the first frame. Hutchinson corralled a loose puck in front of the net and fired it past Litchfield before she could recover. Moher earned another assist on the even strength tally.

Midway through the second period the Catamounts cut the deficit in half with Bridget Baker‘s first goal of the season. Mackenzie MacNeil corralled the puck behind the net and fired a centering feed that deflected off Baker and in past Bemidji State’s Brittni Mowat with 7:31 left in the second. It ended Mowat’s shutout streak against Vermont at 92:29.

Mowat made five saves in the third period to earn her second win of the season. Litchfield made 31 saves for the Catamounts and was named the game’s third star for her efforts.

“I was pleased with our effort today,” said head coach Jim Plumer. “We played a bit like a young team at times and Bemidji is a skilled team and took advantage of some early mistakes. I think we got better as the game went on and I’m looking forward to the rematch tomorrow.”

The Catamounts return to action tomorrow afternoon as they close out their two-game series against Bemidji State at 4 p.m. Fans can watch the action for free at CatamounTV.com
