HS Football: CVU Blows Past Hilltoppers 49-13

St. Johnsbury — Quarterback Andrew Bortnick threw for three touchdowns and three CVU running backs combined for 165 yards and four scores as the Redhawks rolled past the St. Johnsbury Hilltoppers 49-13 on Saturday afternoon on Fairbanks Field.

After a scoreless first quarter, Bortnick hit wideout Sam Mikell on a 40 yard touchdown pass on the first of the second stanza, then dumped a fourth and twelve screen pass to running back Richard Lowrey for a 31 yard score just over six minutes later.  Running back Braven Bose then banged into the end zone with 57 seconds left in the half for a 22-0 lead.

St. Johnsbury got one score back as QB Collin Urie hit Aaron Morrison from eight yards out with 16 seconds left before halftime, but CVU sealed the deal with four straight touchdowns in the second half. Bortnick connected with Trevor Kingston on a 27 yard scoring strike before fullback Jacob Griggs banged home a pair of one yard runs and Lowrey burst in from ten yards out for a 49-6 lead with eight minutes to play. CVU freshman QB Jacob Cady scored the final Hilltopper TD on a 31 yard run with just over three minutes to play.

Bortnick finished the afternoon eight of eleven for 150 yards and three scores. Bose (81), Lowrey (60) and Griggs (24) combined to rush for 165 yards in the win.

Now 3-2, CVU faces Colchester next weekend. St. Johnsbury is 2-3 and they will play host to Rice next Saturday.
