George Commo’s Blog – Laboring on Labor Day Weekend

So it was high school football Friday night in Colchester, Norwich football yesterday in Northfield, and now the final two days of the Lake Monsters season late this afternoon and early  tomorrow afternoon at Centennial Field. Holiday Weekend? What Holiday Weekend? Boy am I lucky that I actually like what I do!

Thought on the weekend so far …

Came away from Friday night impressed with Essex running backs Jordan Hines and Liam Coulter. The competition for Essex is only going to get tougher but Hornets fans have got to feel encourged.

Same thing can be said for Norwich football fans. Mark Murnyck has a huge freshman class and several of those kids played a prominent role as the Cadets mounted a spirited second half comeback before ultimantly falling to a very good RPI team 31-17. Rookie running back Patrick Brown made the headlines, rushing for 117 yards and his first NU touchdown, but this reporter was also impressed by new outside receivers Dayvon Medina and Manni Romero, along with D-backs Michael Corrina and Brasean Stewart and special teamers Tyreque Estrada-Crapps and Connor Bourque. A lot of good potential there …

Speaking of Norwich recruits, men’s hockey Coach Mike McShane guested with us at halftime on Saturday and seems very excited about his incoming class … it is a big one … 11 players … look for the names to be released later this week.

Not a good prognostication week for your truly in the first week of football picks … a very ordinary 10-6 in the first week of statewide high school picks … a totally unexceptable 7-8 in the first week of the Free Press competition. Oh well, it can only get better in Week Two … at least I hope so.
