LYNDONVILLE – Castleton put forth one of its best defensive efforts of the year, allowing 12 first-half points on the way to a 49-32 victory over Lyndon on Saturday afternoon in Stannard Gym.

The Spartans shot 30.5 percent from the floor but limited the Hornets to just 19.3 percent shooting overall and outrebounded them 47-43 to improve to 8-1 and 4-1 in the North Atlantic Conference. Lyndon, meanwhile, dropped to 2-6 and 1-2 in conference play with the loss.

Seniors Jade Desroches and Bryanna duPont both reach double figures, with 12 and ten points respectively. Desroches added four rebounds and two assists while duPont added seven rebounds and five steals. Amanda Beatty was a force inside with six points, 14 rebounds and three blocks.

Brittney LaFreniere led Lyndon with nine points while Mikayla Hodge pulled down ten rebounds but only scored three points on 1-for-6 shooting. Abby Salvadore added three points, ten rebounds and three assists off the bench.

Both teams started slow with a layup from Desroches giving Castleton a 4-2 edge midway through the first quarter. The Spartans allowed just one more basket, finishing the quarter with a 9-4 advantage.

The Spartans pushed their lead to ten, 14-4, on a jumper by Ali Jones with 7:26 left and over the next five minutes stretched their lead to 21-7 on a triple from Desroches. A late three by the Hornets left them down 23-12 with 11 seconds left in the half.

Lyndon managed to cut the Castleton lead to eight points midway through the third quarter, 28-20, though the Spartans finished the period on a 7-1 run for a 35-21 edge going into the fourth. Castleton extended its lead as high as 22 points in the final ten minutes before finishing with the 17-point win.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday, Jan. 2, when they host Norwich at 1 pm in Glenbrook Gym.
