Women’s Hoop: Spartans Top Badgers 62-51

CASTLETON – Castleton’s women’s basketball team picked up a North Atlantic Conference victory on Thursday evening at Glenbrook Gymnasium, defeating Johnson St. by a final score of 62-51.

The win moves the Spartans to 4-1 in NAC play and 7-1 overall, while Johnson St. moves to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in the NAC. Castleton shot 41.5 percent from the floor in the victory, including 38.9 percent from three-point range. Johnson St. shot just 30.2 percent from the floor, while shooting 29.2 percent from downtown.

Jade Desroches led all scorers in the contest with 21 points, while also pulling in six rebounds with three steala snd two assists. Bryanna duPont also hit double figures in the contest, chipping in with 12 points, five rebounds and two assists. Makayla Farrara was key off the bench with eight points, four rebounds, two steals and two blocks.

Johnson St. jumped out to the early lead, going up 3-0 before Ali Jones drained a three-pointer to draw the game even. A Desroches three-pointer put the Spartans up three just more than 3:30 into the contest, giving the Spartans a lead they would never relinquish.

Castleton would pull away in the second quarter, outscoring the Badgers 18-10 in the frame to take a 29-15 lead into halftime. Desroches tallied 10 points in the first half, while Amanda Beatty pulled in four rebounds for the Spartans.

The third quarter was once again controlled by the Castleton offense, as they outscored Johnson 16-11 to stretch the lead to 45-26 going into the final frame. Johnson St. made a run in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Spartans 25-17 in the final frame, as the Badgers got hot from deep with less than three minutes to play in the game.

Beatty finished the contest with six rebounds for the Spartans and one point. Ashley Goddard led Johnson St. in scoring, netting 11 points. Dominique Carter-Stanley and Sarah Voorhis each recorded nine points for the Badgers in the contest, while Kasey DeGreenia pulled in a game-high 11 rebounds with five points and seven turnovers.

Castleton is back in action on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. when it hosts Lyndon St. at Glenbrook Gymnasium.
