Women’s Hoop: Spartans Shoot Past Green Mountain 74-47

CASTLETON – The Spartans jumped out to a 46-18 halftime advantage on the way to a 74-47 victory over Green Mountain on Saturday afternoon in Glenbrook Gym.

Castleton shot 41.0 percent from the floor and limited the Eagles to 36.7 percent shooting while forcing 27 turnovers and committing a season-low three. The Spartans also had 20 steals to improve to 14-4 and 9-2 in the North Atlantic Conference. Green Mountain held the rebounding edge 42-40 but dropped to 0-16 and 0-11 in conference play.

Senior Bryanna duPont led the Spartans with ten points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals in just 19 minutes while Makayla Farrara chipped in ten points, four rebounds and two steals off the bench. Lacey Stever impressed with eight points, five rebounds and two steals while Bethany Lanfear had four points, five rebounds and four steals.

The Eagles’ Sherelle Jackson had a team-high 16 points with seven rebounds and seven assists while Mercedes Rideout added nine points and six rebounds. Torie Cowell contributed nine points, and five boards.

Castleton jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the first 6:30, with the final three points coming on a three-point play by Ashlie Fay. Green Mountain ended the run with a basket, but the Spartans scored the next nine points for a 20-5 lead and held a 22-8 advantage at the end of the period.

In the second, Castleton needed just four minutes to stretch its lead to 24 points, 34-10, on a fast break layup by Lindsay Sabo. The Eagles did score the next seven points to trim the deficit to 34-17 with 4:25 left in the half. However, the Spartans locked down and outscored them 12-1 the rest of the quarter for a 46-18 advantage at the break.

Green Mountain scored the first eight points of the second half, before a Taylor Raiche jump shot made it 48-26 at 6:33. Lanfear and Stever scored back-to-back baskets and the team traded hoops the rest of the period, leaving the Spartans in front 57-30 after three. In the fourth, Castleton’s bench and Green Mountain each put up 17 points, to provide the 74-47 final.

Fay finished with four points, three assists and two rebounds while Taylor and Morgan Raiche combined for 12 points, eight rebounds and pair of steals.
