Girl’s Hoop: Lake Region Rallies From 12 Down to Beat Winooski 52-42

Winooski — The Lake Region Union Rangers used a 12-0 run to rally from a 14-2 first quarter deficit, then opening the fourth quarter on a second 12-0 run and went on beat the Winooski High Spartans 52-42 on Tuesday night inside Hawthorne Gym.

Playing their first game in 15 days the Rangers came out rusty and Winooski took full advantage, forcing turnovers and opening the game on a 14-2 run. Lydia Nattress’ six points and Niki Dang’s four keyed the run. But the Rangers regrouped, scoring the final four points of the first quarter and then ran eight more to start the second, tying the game at 14. LRU’s Katie Menard led the run scoring eight of the twelve Rangers points. The two teams then went back and forth, with the Spartans taking a one point lead at 23-22 into the break.

The Rangers opened a six point third quarter lead, only to see Winooski come back on a three by Riley Corrigan and a Dank steal and layup to climb back within one. It was 33-32 Lake Region after three.

But the fourth quarter belonged to the visitors as LRU began the quarter on their second 12-0 run of the night to open a 13 point lead, and they cruised home for the win.
Katie Menard led the winners with 13 points … Megan Menard added 11, Molly Horton chipped in nine and Becky Doucet contributed eight in the win.
Dang led three Spartans in double figures with 14. Corrigan finished with 11 and Nattress ended up with 10.
With the win Lake Region is now 6-3 on the season. Winooski slips to 5-5.
