Boy’s Hockey: Hornets Top Rebels, Raiders Tie Redhawks in Cairns Doubleheader

South Burlington — The Essex Hornets shutout the South Burlington Rebels 4-0 and the CVU Redhawks and the Rutland Raiders fought to a scoreless overtime tie in a Wednesday night hockey doubleheader inside Cairns Arena.

Essex took a 1-0 lead on an Alex Guimmo shot just inside the far post at the 9:03 mark of the first period. The Hornets then killed off an extended two man advantage for SB to go to the locker room with the lead. The visitors then opened up the game with two goals a minute and twenty seconds apart in the second. At 9:24 Nick McGovern fired in a shot from the low slot just seconds after a Rebel penalty had expired for a 2-0 advantage, and then Ryan Young stole the puck and went in for a four on four breakaway goal at 10:44 for a 3-0 lead after two. Johan Janaro’s goal at 5:43 of the third completed the scoring.

Erik Short made 24 saves in net to record the shutout for the Hornets. Michael Baechle stopped 22 shots in the loss for South Burlington. With the win Essex is now 7-3-1. SB slips to 5-3-3.

In the early game goaltenders Glen Mandel of Rutland and Ty Parker of CVU matched goose eggs in battling to the standoff. Mandel was the busier of the two netminders, stopping 26 CVU shots including six in the sudden death overtime. Parker was called on for 13 saves. Rutland is now 4-7-1 on the season. CVU is 3-3-5.
