Boy’s Hockey: Rebels Win CSB Cup, Top CVU 3-2

South Burlington – Brendan Lahue scored two goals and Travis Gay recorded 25 saves as the South Burlington Rebels snapped a five game losing streak, edging the CVU Redhawks 3-2 on Wednesday evening inside Cairns Arena.

Lahue got SB on the board early, taking a great feed from Mike Flaherty and snapping it past Redhawks netminder Ty Parker just 3:33 into the contest. Gay then preserved the lead, stopping all eight CVU shots in the period for a 1-0 SB lead after one.

The Redhawks, though, quickly drew even in the second, as Tyler Bodette put away Joe Parento’s rebound just 53 seconds into the middle stanza. But at 5:10 the Rebels retook the lead as the puck bounced out toward the left circle off a wild scramble in front of the CVU net and the Rebs John Weinheimer fired it off Parker’s pad and in for a 2-1 advantage. Then late in the period a CVU turnover at the SB line sent Flaherty off on a breakaway. Parker made the stop but Lahue threw the rebound upstairs for a 3-1 SB lead after two.

CVU’s Collin Vincent buried a breakaway chance with just over four and a half minutes to play to cut the margin to a single goal, but that would be as close as the ‘Hawks would get.
Gay was spectacular making 25 saves … SB earning the win despite being outshot on the night 27-10.
With the win South Burlington is now 6-6-2 on the season. The loss drops CVU to 6-5-5.
