Women’s Hoops: UMass Blows Past Vermont 81-49

BURLINGTON –– Hailey Leidel and Destiney Philoxy each had 25 points in leading UMass to an 83-49 win over Vermont Friday night from Patrick Gym. With the win, the Minutewomen improved to 4-3 this season while the Catamounts fell to 2-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Leidel hit back-to-back three’s early in the first quarter as UMass jumped out to an 17-4 early edge. The Minutewomen took an 21-8 lead after the first stanza, UVM’s Hanna Crymble scored all eight points for the Catamounts.
In the second quarter sophomore guard Rose Caverly led the way for Vermont. She scored 11 straight points for Vermont in the opening three minutes of the quarter. UMass’ Destiney Philoxy and Leidel combined to shoot 11 for 13 in the first half for 28 points and the Minutewomen took 15-point edge into the half.
Vermont held UMass scoreless in the first 5:27 of the third quarter and made a 10-2 run. Josie Larkins hit a three-pointer to cut the UMass lead to seven late in the quarter.
In the fourth quarter UMass used a 12-0 run to pull away from the Catamounts and secure their third win of the season against an America East opponent.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Rose Caverly set a new career-high with 20 points, she also had seven rebounds and two steals.
In the first half there was 13 fouls called, in the third quarter alone there were 11.
Hanna Crymble set a new career mark with four blocked shots.
