The boys and girls basketball and hockey seasons are finally over. Kudos to Bob Johnson and the VPA who managed to juggle the schedule of all the tournaments through an endless month of snow.
It was worth the wait because it was great post season!
In boys basketball:
In Division 1 Rutland completes an undefeated season for its 2nd straight state championship a year after breaking a 50 year jinx. Coach Mike Wood with his 200th win at Rutland and he has two state championships and his dad Leon has one as he picked one up as MSJ coach in 1999. As a matter of fact Mike’s brother Chris who has been an assistant for the Raiders the last couple of years also has a national championship as the womens basketball coach at the College of St. Joes in Rutland.
In Division 2 Fair Haven picks up the title its first since 2002 and the 3rd for coach Bob Prenevost. The Slaters also winning the Division 2 state championship in football four months ago.
In Division 3 Windsor did the same thing that Fair Haven did and one better as Windsor not only wins the Division 3 state title in boys basketball and the D3 title in football, but also the Division 3 title in girls basketball.
In Division 4 The Sharon Academy not only picks up its first state championship, but completes an undefeated season.
In girls basketball:
In Division 1 St.Johnsbury wins the title and breaks CVU’s five year stranglehold on the title. Also St. Jay junior Sadie Stetson wins the Vermont Gatorade Player of the Year Award for the 2nd straight year.
In Division 2 Mt. Abraham wins the title in the same year that its coach Connie LaRose will enter the VPA Hall of Fame.
In Division 3 Again what more can you say about Windsor?
In Division 4 MSJ has another trophy on Convent Avenue in Rutland after picking up its 4th straight state championship and a scary thought because everybody is back next year!
In girls hockey:
In Division 1 BFA wins its 10th state title
In Division 2 Stowe wins its first state championship.
In boys hockey:
In Division 1 Essex wins its 15th state title.
In Division 2 Woodstock completes an undefeated season with one tie and wins its 2nd state championship first in Division 2.
Yes it has been quite a winter!
