It was quite a weekend in boys basketball and in boys hockey.
In state championship games at the Barre Auditorium:
In Division 4 Proctor defeated Twin Valley 65-50 as Proctor wins it’s 18th state championship and 10th in Division 4. Proctor has won 4 state championships in 6 years.
In Division 2 Fair Haven nipped Montpelier 53-52. It was an instant classic as the Slaters won their 7th state title and 2nd in 3 years.
Thetford the #7 seed defeated Enosburg in the Division 3 state title game 54-44 for its 2nd straight state championship.
Division 1 yesterday at the UVM Patrick Gym and that game too was an instant classic as Rice defeated defending state champ St. Johnsbury 53-51 as Rice wins its 16th state title.
In boys hockey Stowe upset Essex and BFA winning in overtime over Rice in the Division 1 semi’s.
Essex finished 2nd to Danbury,Connecticut in the New England high school wrestling meet. Mt. Anthony finished 4th. Essex finished 2nd to Mt. Anthony last week in the Vermont state meet as Mt. Anthony won its 32nd straight state championship. Essex very well could end that streak next year.
Seth Carney of Essex who is a member of the Vermont Shrine football team won the New England championship in the 170 pound division.
Fair Haven also winning a state championship in bowling. Yes indeed an exciting weekend in high school sports!
