I mentioned yesterday in my blog that at least three father son combinations have won basketball state championships with the latest being Rutland’s Mike Wood whose dad Leon Wood won a state championship with MSJ in 1999.
There are at least four now because I got word yesterday that Dean Houghton the dad won three basketball state championships at Poultney and his son Steve won two girls basketball state championships at Burr and Burton and his son Jeff won a state championship in girls basketball at Burr and Burton as well. That team was undefeated. So that might be the only father and two sons combination that have won state championships. Steve Houghton also won a baseball state championship at West Rutland. Dean Houghton was also a successful football coach at Poultney. The football field at Poultney and the gym at Mill River are named in honor of Dean Houghton.
Speaking of Mill River…it will be Mill River vs. Lyndon for the Division 2 state championship in girls basketball on Saturday at the Barre Auditorium at 3:45. Let’s see… Mill River is one of the local teams here in Rutland, but Lyndon is coached by NSN CEO Eric Berry. What do I do? I will have my predictions on Saturday in this blog, but as far as who am I pulling for? I will just say I will keep my professional integrity and not say anything.
As for UVM and Purdue tonight in the NCAA’s. I’m rooting for UVM, but I say the Boilermakers win the game!
