Rutland High is still basking in the glow of its first state championship in boys basketball at the UVM Patrick Gym on Monday night. Of course there has been no school since the victory because of the storm.

A few side-lites:

Off the top of my head so this is somewhat unofficial, but it appears that with Rutland’s victory it completes the 3rd father-son coaching combination to win a state championship and the 2nd to do it in boys basketball.

Rutland’s Mike Wood and his dad Leon Wood who coached MSJ to the Division 1 state championship in 1999. The last southern champion to win until Rutland did it by the way.

Mill River’s Jay Wilson who coached the Minutemen to the Division 2 boys state championship in 1982 and 1989 and his son Kyle Wilson who coached Fair Haven to the Division 2 girls state championship in 2016.

Bernie Cieplicki Sr. who won three Division 1 state championships at Rice and his son Kevin Cieplicki who won a Division 1 state championship at Rice in 2000.

Pretty rare company!

Many people are comparing Rutland’s state championship game victory to the Red Sox winning the World Series in 2004. The years of disappointment from one generation to another year after year until finally that glorious championship!!!
