Girl’s Hockey: Stowe and BFA-St.Albans Win State Championships at Gutterson

BURLINGTON — The Stowe Raiders won their first ever girls hockey championship and the BFA-St.Albans Comets earned their tenth state crown with Championship Game wins on Monday night inside the Gutterson Fieldhouse.

In the opener Stowe shut out the Missisquoi Thunderbirds 5-0 for the Division Two Title, while in the second game the Comets edged past their longtime rivals the Essex Hornets 2-0.

In game one after a scoreless first period the Raiders got second period goals from Abbie Rice and Allison Walker for a 2-0 advantage after two. Then Heather Walker and sister Allison scored twice in the first minute of the third to double the lead to 4-0 before Allison Walker completed the first hat trick in a D-2 Title game since 2015 at 3:43 to account for the final score.

Leo Clark made 28 saves for the Raiders who finished their season at 19-2-2. MVU ended their year at 17-6.

In the nightcap Linsey Larrow’s tap in off a wild scramble in front of the Essex net broke a scoreless tie at the 10:05 mark of the second period and Lizzie Hill then added an insurance goal late in the third as BFA beat the top seeded Hornets. Maddie Hungerford stopped all 24 Essex shots as the Comets atoned for their loss to Rutland in last year’s Title Game.
