STOWE, Vt. - Sophomore Caitlin Patterson (Anchorage, Alaska) won the women's 10k freestyle and sophomore Franz Bernstein (Unterthingau, Germany) took the men's 15k freestyle to lead Vermont at Trapp Family Lodge on the final day of its home carnival. The Catamounts fell just short in the team score in their bid to win for the first time this season. Dartmouth finished first with 890 points while Vermont was second with 882 points.
Patterson finished with a time of 30:49.1 and was 15 seconds better than Dartmouth's Rosie Brennan, who finished second.
Senior Jennie Bender (Johnson, Vt.) added a 10th-place finish in the women's 10k freestyle while sophomore Caitlin Curran (Waitsfield, Vt.) finished 22nd.
Bernstein finished 10 seconds off the pace with a time of 26:56.6 in the 15k freestyle. Middlebury's Patrick Johnson finished first. It marked the third podium finish this season for Bernstein.
Sophomore Alex Howe (Gilford, N.H.) added a 20th-place finish.
Vermont continues the EISA Circuit at the Dartmouth Carnival on Feb. 12 and 13 at the Dartmouth Skiway and Dartmouth Cross Country Center.
