Boy’s Hoop: Green Knights Hold Cougars to Four First Half Points, Top MMU 54-31

South Burlington — The Rice Memorial High School Green Knights held the visiting Mt. Mansfield Union High School Cougars to just four free throws in the first half, and cruised to a 54-31 on Tuesday night on Bernie Cieplicki Court.

On senior night Rice rode the hot hand of senior Ben Shungu who tossed in eight first quarter points as the Knights built a 13-2 lead after a quarter. Then in the second eight minutes Rice frshman Kam Farris came alive, scoring six of RMHS’s nine points. Shutdown from the floor the Cougars settlted for four of six free throws to trail 22-4 at the break.

MMU found their range in the third quarter, outscoring Rice 18-15, with eight of those points coming from sophomore big man Zach Reinhardt. But Shungu topped that with a nine point quarter to leave the game at 37-22 going to the final frame, and the Knights added 17 more points down the stretch to win going away.

Shungu led all scores with 21 points. Farris added 14 and Elliott Nelson added 10 for the winners.

Reinhardt finished with 12 as the only double figures scorer for MMU.

With the win Rice improves to 17-2 heading into a first place Division One showdown on Friday night with arch-rival Burlington.

The loss drops Mt. Mansfield to 12-7.
