BURLINGTON – The Army Black Knights scored three times in the first half to record a 3-1 victory over Vermont in season opening women's soccer action at Virtue Field on Friday.
"Army came out stronger than we did in the first half and tested us early. The goals that were scored weren't a result of major breakdowns, they were a result of us not taking care of the details. We felt much better about our performance in the second half. We owned a majority of the possession and scored a quality goal," said Vermont head coach
Kristi Lefebvre.
Hanna Rozzi scored the first goal of the season with a blast from 25 yards out that found the upper left corner. Army took a 1-0 lead just nine minutes into the game.
Kim An gave the Black Knights a two goal lead in the 26th minute. She was able to collect a pass, got past a UVM defender and beat Leiby one-on-one for her first goal of the year.
Bailey Widman added another tally just before the half. She headed in a cross from Katie Holder to push Army's lead to three.
The Black Knights took the 3-0 lead and a 12-4 advantage in shots into halftime.
After hitting the crossbar twice in the second half, the Catamounts were able to get on the board with just over two minutes left in the match.
Bre Pletnick headed in a cross from
Alexandra Dezenzo for her first career tally at UVM.
Sarah Leiby and
Ally Ramos combined to make six saves in net for the Catamounts, each playing 45 minutes. Linda Rosas and Jessica McAllister totaled three stops for Army.
The Black Knights begin the season at 1-0, while the Catamounts start the year 0-1. Vermont will be back in action on Sunday (Aug. 19) when it travels to UConn for a 1 p.m. game in Storrs, Conn.
