The Celtics won the battle, but lost the war yesterday as it was announced that Rajon Rondo was lost for the season with an ACL injury.
Listen, the Celtics were an 8th or 7th seed at best even with Rondo. It was becoming apparent that they were a .500 team even though there was still a ways to go in the season.
In the short term, they might be OK without Rondo. They actually have a better record without him than they do with him, but in the long run forget it. They ain't going nowhere without him.
The Celtics have three choices in my mind:
1. Blow the team up now. See what you can get for Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett in a trade or trades.
2. Make do with what they got and see what happens.
3. Try to replace Rondo through some kind of a free agent signing.
One point guard that's available is Delonte West. Should they take a chance on him again?
I'm never for giving up on a season especially when it is only halfway through, but in this case I might support blowing the team up.
There will never be a better time than right now to do it.
I actually thought that this year's Pro Bowl was better than last year's Pro Bowl.
I only saw the first half, but I got the feeling that the players were trying at least a little bit.
Something I didn't see last year.
That being said the Pro Bowl is a joke!
Hard to say which All Star game is a bigger joke, the NFL Pro Bowl or the NHL All Star Game.
I think I'm definitely the lone person having the thought that Rondo being out will actually improve the Celtics offensive production. They are currently averaging 95.1 PPG. 21st in the league. I might be way off base here but I actually think that over their final 38 games you'll see an increase in scoring. I think that between Avery Bradley, Leandro Barbosa, and Courtney Lee will be enough support at the point that they don't need to make a move to bring in another PG.
I may be completely wrong, but I think with Rondo, there is too much standing around waiting for Rondo to pound the ball into the floor waiting for a high screen and roll, resulting in too many perimeter jump shots for the Celtics. I think you'll see Doc Rivers make some changes in the halfcourt set that will help with offensive fluency. And also needless to say all of those players replacing Rondo are more of a threat while shooting the ball.
