It wasn't pretty ... but it was a win. The Vermont men's basketball team beat Albany 50-47 last night on the road ... the win leaves the Catamounts at 18-10 ... 12-2 in America East ... tied with Stony Brook at the top of the league standings ... and UVM has the tie breaker. So if the Cats can take care of business against 0-25 Binghamton on the road and 4-22 UMBC at home they will be the conference regular season champs ... giving them the top seed in the conference tournament ... home court in the championship game if they get there ... and an automatic NIT bid if they don't win the league's NCAA berth.
If I haven't made it clear enough in this space over the years let me do it right now ... I am not a big NBA fan. Sorry ... there are just too many other things going on ... anything hockey ... high school and college hoop ... re-runs of Criminal Minds ... whatever ... I just don't waste my valuable remote possession time on David Stern's traveling circus.
With that in mind I haven't really paid that much attention to Linsanity ... but I certainly am aware of it ... how could I not be? The Harvard man is the talk of the sports world. I mean he was one of the lead stories on the CBS Evening News last night ... not the sports ... the news! He has been in the Knicks lineup for seven games and they have won seven straight ... it is one of the great unexpected sports stories in recent memory.
So why am I not drinking the Koolaid? First off it is the Knicks ... two weeks ago this was a team without a pulse and their fans were ready to drop them in the hole and start throwing in the dirt. Now they are packing the Garden ... scalpers were getting big bucks for tix last night ... talk about pink hats!
Then there is the media feeding frenzy ... How do you spell Tim Tebow? The "anything to fill airtime" media mavens have made Jeremy Lin the flavor of the month and the fact that it is happening in New York has just compounded the situation. Meanwhile the REAL STORY in the Big Apple ... the best team in the NHL Rangers ... is getting ignored. Hey ... what can I say ... I'm a hockey guy!
Having said all that it is a great story. And I do wish Jeremy Lin all the best ... Ride it while you can kid! But hold on tight. When you have a bad night ... as is bound to happen sooner or later ... when you clank a big trey off the iron at the buzzer or turn it over at the end and the Knicks lose a game they seemed to have had won ... then watch your back. They can turn very quickly in the Apple.
