Fulford Run, Stone Pick Give NU Second ECFC Win
Northfield --- The Norwich University Football Team scored a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns on Saturday afternoon, snapping a 17-17 tie, and beating Mt. Ida 31-17 in their Homecoming game at Sabine Field.
After Mt. Ida rallied from an early 14-3 deficit to tie the game at 17 late in the third quarter, Norwich used a one yard Andrew Fulford run with 4:06 remaining and an 89 yard interception return by former Hartford Hurricane Sean Stonetwo minutes later to secure their second straight victory.
The Cadets scored early as freshman running back Derrick Pitts broke off a 74 yard run to get them close and junior quarterback and former BFA Bobwhite Kris Sabourin finished off the drive with a 7 yard run just 3:48 into the game. After the visiting Mustangs booted a field goal to cut the margin to 7-3 at the quarter, Norwich upped their lead to 14-3 when Fulford tossed an 18 yard halfback option TD pass to tightend Jeff Hill a minute and a half into the second.
But Mt. Ida responded. Scott Drosendahl scored on a quarterback sneak to cut the lead to 14-10 at the half, and after Norwich's Long Ding booted a 35 yard field goal in the third, the Mustangs tied the game when DB Mac Charles picked off a tipped Sabourin pass and returned it 30 yards to knot things at 17.
But Fulford's run and Stone's pick in the fourth gave Norwich the win. With the victory NU is now 2-3 overall ... 2-0 in Eastern Collegiate Football Conference play. They travel to Castleton to take on the Spartans next Saturday.
