George Commo's Blog - Thursday 10-27-11

Several more surprises in day two of the VPA fall tournaments yesterday ...

In Division One girl's soccer #13 St. Johnsbury fought #4 Spaulding to a 1-1 tie ... then eliminated the Crimson Tide on penalty kicks ...

Meanwhile in D-2 girl's action the fourth and fifth seeds were both taken out in the playdowns ... #4 Mt. Abe falling 1-0 to #13 Missisquoi and #5 Springfield getting beaten by #12 Vergennes 2-1. That matches the T-Birds and the Commodores head to head in the quarterfinals ... meaning either #12 or #13 is going to make it to the semi-finals.

It wasn't raining much yesterday in St. Louis when MLB pulled the plug on Game Six of the World Series ... but give them credit ... with the way the rain picked up later in the afternoon and into the evening they got the call right. It should actually make for better baseball ... or at least for better rested pitchers ... heading into Game Six tonight and Game Seven .... if necessary tomorrow night.

In the NHL you knew it had to happen, right? The Canadiens, in their worst start since 1941, snapped out of it last night with their first home ice win of the year, whipping the Flyers 5-1 at the Bell Centre. So they right the ship just in time for a home and home series with the Bruins that starts tonight at the Garden. Also note ... Max Pacioretty ... the guy on the wrong end of Big Z's hit last year ... scored twice last night in the Habs' win.

Big announcement tonight in South Burlington ... plans will be reveled for the new Vermont Sports Hall of Fame ... I'll be hosting the event tonight at 6:00 ... full videostream on NSN.

And this morning on The Really Big Sports Show we'll be joined by Norwich football Coach Mark Murnyack and another one of our new NSN talk hosts, Rob Ryan. The Really Big Sports Show is on the air at 9:00 AM, or anytime after that on our Archive at NSN Radio.net .
