Vikings look for return trip to Aud

The Lyndon Institute girls basketball team and first-year head coach Eric Berry will look to return to the Barre Auditorium while improving on last year's 14 win season.

Despite the loss of a number of key players, a number of strong players return for the Vikings. Riley Blankenship returns for her senior season and will look to close out a solid LI career with her best season yet. “Riley is extremely strong and a great athlete,” coach Berry said. “She can score inside and outside and will have the green light.”

Also in the mix for the Vikings is senior guard Hannah Cornell. Cornell is recovering from injury but when back to 100%, coach Berry claims she will be very dangerous in the open floor.

New to the squad is freshman Sam Smith, a very good shooter and someone coach Berry says isn't afraid of hard work.

Darien Smith returns to the LI lineup after two years away from the sport and she will be looked upon for rebounding and defense. Kayla Jardine, a junior forward, also returns for the Vikings and coach Berry is hopeful that she steps up as a leader. “She has a nose for the ball and is creative inside,” Berry added. Senior Taryn Colby will also find herself in the lineup as a newcomer and will be looked towards as a key defender.

“Our goal will be to be at the peak of our game at the end of February and into March,” Berry said. “Early on it may be difficult for the girls as they have to learn an entire new system and philosophy. We intend to run, we intend to put pressure on the other team for 32 minutes to force mistakes and we will be aggressive at all times.”

Lyndon opens their season on Wednesday when they host North Country.
