When a team graduates four starters you often hear “rebuilding year” during the next season. Not the case with the Blue Mountain girls basketball team- not when your returning starter is Aimee Thompson.
Thompson has been the team leader in points and rebounds for the past three years and is returning for her senior year poised to make it her best. She is just 17 points away from the 1,000 point milestone but more than personal milestones are on the agenda for her and the Bucks, who will look to improve on last year's 12-9 record.
“[Aimee] has led the team the last three years and I will need her to be that leader again,” coach and father, Gary Thompson said. He will also need senior leadership from Ashley Ashford.
“We don't have big numbers this year so keeping healthy and injury free will be huge. The younger girls coming in will have to adjust rather quickly and be up for the challenge. Hopefully we can get better every game and become a force by playoff time.”
Coach Thompson will look for big years from sophomore Torie Peters who played big minutes last year and has potential to be a big threat in the low post alongside Thompson. He will also look for freshman Jordan Farquharson to step into a big role. “She is very athletic and basketball smart. She will be called on to be a leader at the point guard position, a big task for a freshman, but I believe she is up for the challenge.”
With youth and inexperience in the equation there may be some bumps in the road for the Bucks but as coach Thompson puts it, “If the girls reach their potential we should be competitive each game.”
The Bucks open the season on Saturday when they host rival Danville at 2:30 p.m.
