The St. Johnsbury Academy boys nordic team, which finished fifth in last years Div. I state championship, didn't suffer a graduation loss. So, needless to say, things look positive for a solid finish this year for coach Tom Viles' squad.
A handful of solid returnees look to lead the 'Toppers on the boys side this year. Senior Elijah Doerfler earned consistently strong finishes last year and is expected to do the same this season. Nate Solnit (junior) and Ethan Goss (senior) promise to post some fast times, according to Viles, and Stan Walden, a senior captain, skis well under pressure and should be important if the team earns a podium spot at the championships.
On the girls side the Academy will need Robin Vincent and Lauren Gillott to perform well if they hope to improve upon last year's eight place finish at the state championship races. Viles says Vincent improved consistently throughout last season and is coming off a successful cross country running season. Gillott, who is just a freshman, has a strong background in nordic racing.
The nordic season is slated to start next Tuesday at Peoples Academy.
