Shattuck lifts 'Toppers over MMU

Dylan Shattuck scored on a four yard run in the third overtime to give the St. Johnsbury Academy Hilltoppers a 12-6 victory over Mount Mansfield in a defensive battle.

The Cougars got on the board first at the 5:07 mark of the first quarter when Luke Dolan rushed in from five yards away. After a failed extra point, the Cougars held a 6-0 lead.

The MMU advantage stayed intact until the third quarter when Shattuck rushed in from nine yards out to even the score. Sam Hutchins extra point kick sailed wide and it remained 6-6.

It remained a defensive battle throughout and each side received huge efforts, including big days from Brooks Gay for Mount Mansfield and Richard Emery for St. Johnsbury.

The big defensive efforts kept the game knotted at 6-6 and sent it into overtime where each team had four plays to score from the 10 yard line. Neither team was able to score on the first set of downs, with the 'Toppers getting their field goal attempt blocked. On the second set of downs, the 'Toppers again stepped up on defense but again they couldn't take advantage on offense with the field goal attempt by Hutchins coming up short. But, on attempt number three, it was Shattuck coming through for the 'Toppers to secure the victory.

St. Johnsbury improves to 4-3 with the victory. They travel to face rival Lyndon Institute on Saturday.
