09/10/2010 10:00 PM - St. Johnsbury piled on 15 fourth-quarter points but it wasn’t enough to make up for their 27-6 halftime deficit, as the host Rutland Raiders took down the Hilltoppers, 41-21.
Troy Davine made his presence felt right from the start as he tossed a pair of touchdown passes in the opening quarter, the first a 30-yard strike to Jon Sullivan and the second a nine yard toss to Mike Triller.
Davine didn’t slow up in the second quarter as he connected with Mike McMahon from 24 yards out to make it 20-0 Rutland.
St. Johnsbury finally got on the board with seven minutes remaining in the opening half when Shyfeek Goff ran it in from seven yards out. But, Davine answered right back with his fourth touchdown pass of the opening half, hooking up with TJ Engler for a 34-yard pass and catch.
Davine added two more touchdown passes in the second half for a total of six on the night, with all of them going to different receivers. The final two TDs went to Dalton Mitchell and Kyle Kelly.
St. Johnsbury added a pair of scores in the fourth quarter when Zach Gray connected from 43 yards out with Matt Lyon for a score and Gray tossed one to Goff from 26 yards out.
The defense of the Raiders also proved tough as they intercepted Gray three times on the night with Mike Triller, Drew Laird and Nate Swahn all making picks.
The win evens Rutland’s record at 1-1 while St. Johnsbury falls to 0-2.
