Harwood sweeps Div. II track and field

WINDSOR - Harwood Union earned a sweep at the Division II state championship track and field meet Saturday at Murphy Morse Track at Windsor High School.

“It was a complete team effort,” said Highlander coach Taggert Haslem. “We got some great individual performances, but I was most proud of the way we supported each other.”

Phillips Kim of Lyndon Institute won the 100 and 200 and helped the Vikings to a third place finish, a spot above their fourth place seeding.

Harwood's Naomi Koliba won the high jump for the third consecutive year felt her team's support was key.

“It’s uplifting; inspiring,” said Koliba “It makes your legs go faster, you heart beat stronger. It’s why we won.”

Two state records were set at the meet as Milton junior pole vaulter Karleigh Manfredi cleared 10-feet, 7-1/4 inches and the Fair Haven 4x100 team of Austin Amery, Justin Perelin, Joel Link and Andrew Reid raced in a time of 44.3 seconds.

“I accomplished a new state record and a new PR (personal best), but I’m always going to be disappointed because I didn’t get the next height,” said Manfredi. “But I think it was a pretty good day for me anyway.”

Montpelier's Colby Cunningham fell just short in his bid to win four state titles.

Montpelier's Colby Cunningham won the long jump by two inches and then he won the high jump by six inches. Less than 10 minutes later, he led for much of the way but faltered at the end of a third place finish in the 100 meters.

“The spacing of the events is tough,” said Cunningham on his way from the high jump to the 100 finals. “My left leg is starting to give a little.”

He eventually went on to win the triple jump.

Like fellow Viking, Kim, Riley Blankenship posted multiple wins on the girls side. Mt Abe's Cassie Marion also earned a pair of wins.
