GMC women fall to visiting Badgers

The Eagles outscored the Badgers in the second half, but couldn’t make up for the 15 point halftime deficit as they dropped a 62-53 decision to Johnson State College on Saturday afternoon at the Eagle Dome.  The loss puts the Eagles record at 2-12 overall, while they remain winless in North Atlantic Conference play at 0-9.  The win ups the Badgers overall record to 4-12 and 2-8 in NAC action.

After falling behind 35-20 at halftime the Eagles knew they had to gather themselves for a run at the Badgers in the second half.  From the 8:25 mark to 5:54 remaining in the game, the Eagles would go on a 10-0 run and narrow the gap.  With 1:16 to play the women were down by five after two big threes by junior guard Chelsea Paul.  Unfortunately, that would be as close as the team would get as the Badgers hit some free throws in closing minutes to ice the game.

Senior guard Andrea Deuell was the standout player for the Badgers as she totaled a game-high 28 points to go with five rebounds, seven assists and seven steals.  Freshman guard Brittany Robertson was the other JSC player to score in double-digits as she scored 12 points. JSC’s freshman center KC Cousineau was the team’s leading rebounder and added six points in the win.

For the Eagles, senior forward Millicent Hopper continued her strong play on both ends of the court leading the women in both scoring and rebounding with 15 points and a season-high 20 rebounds. The feat was also her seventh double-double on the year.  Juniors Paul and forward Jacque Caster both scored 14 points and grabbed seven boards on the afternoon.

The Eagles will face NAC foe Castleton on Tuesday, January 24th at 7:30 p.m. while the Badgers will return home for a date with NAC opponent New England College on Thursday, January 26th at 5:30 p.m.
