Lamonda big winner at NEVBA fishing derby

The Northeast Vermont Bass Anglers (NEVBA) hosted the inaugural South Bay ice fishing derby on Saturday. Despite brutally cold weather, with a wind chill of around 15-below, 57 people entered the contest on Lake Memphremagog.

The fishing derby awarded prizes every hour for largest perch and northern pike caught, starting at 8 a.m. and finishing with a final weigh-in at 3 p.m. The contest also awarded a “lunker” prize for both types of fish.

The big winner of the day was Larry Lamonda of Newport. Lamonda took home lunker honors in both categories, reeling in a 10.25-pound, 34.5-inch northern pike in the final hour of the event. He also landed the largest perch of the day, weighing in a 1.21-pound perch during the 9 a.m. weigh-in. Lamonda won five hourly prizes overall, three times with the largest northern pike and twice with the largest perch.

Justin Lamonda, Larry's son, also had a big day on the ice as he took home hourly-winner honors five times as well. Other hourly winners included Evan Robinson, Matt Manzi, Eric Driscoll, Adam Poquette, Tim Wilcox and Mark Allen.

"I would like to thank all the businesses that donated prizes, the members of our club that helped organize and run the event and all the people that braved the below zero weather to help make our first event a success,” NEVBA president Terry Sicard said. “It was a great turnout and we are hopeful to host more events like this in the future.”
