RUTLAND - The seventh-ranked Castleton men’s hockey team scored seven goals spanning 20 minutes between the second and third periods on Friday evening as they took care of business with a 10-3 victory over the University of New England in their home opener at Spartan Arena.

The Spartans broke a 3-3 tie with just 35 seconds remaining in the second period and scored again with only four seconds left to make it a 5-3 contest going into the final period. Five goals in the third, including the last one with 41 seconds left completed the scoring barrage for host squad.

It was a balanced attack for Castleton as 13 different players recorded a point, highlighted by a two-goal, two-assist performance from sophomore Dan Bell (Victoria, B.C.). Senior Seth McNary (Woburn, Mass.) was solid in net with 18 saves.

The Spartans got on the board just 18 seconds into the first period off a nice goal by Bell. Sophomore Colin Murray (Oshawa, Ont.) wrapped around the net and found Bell in front, where he made a quick move before going top-shelf for his first goal of the year.

UNE responded just three and a half minutes later as Russ Franey (York, Maine) ripped a slap shot over the left shoulder of McNary to tie the game at one. The Nor’easters made it two straight goals, 17:23 into the period as Sean Sullivan (Worcester, Mass.) found Tyler Fluent (Biddeford, Maine) for a one-time right in front of the net.

Castleton tied the game up 5:45 into the second period on a goal by sophomore Nick Lazorko (Rockwall, Texas). Freshman Ryan Frost (Fullerton, Calif.) started off the play with a lead pass to Justin Alonzo (San Jose, Calif.) who took it down the right side of the ice, made a spin move around the defender and back-handed it to Lazorko, waiting right in front of the net.

The Spartans took back the lead at the 10:32 mark of the period on the power play when Murray deflected in a wrist shot by sophomore Ryan Delorme (Kanata, Ont.) from the point to give Castleton the 3-2 advantage.

UNE fought back to tie less than three minutes later as Ben Bourgeois (New Haven, Vt.) scored off passes by Brendan Brickley (Everett, Mass.) and Zeth Zielinski (Woonsocket, R.I.).

The score remained tied until the Spartans struck again with just 35 seconds on a goal by Alonzo in front of the net off some good passing from freshman Kevin Van Dyk (Grand Valley, Ont.) and Frost. Castleton kept up the momentum and were rewarded as Bell lit the lamp with just four seconds left to push the lead to 5-3.

The final period was all Spartans, as they outshot the Nor’easters 25-2 in the final 20 minutes and put five goals up on the board. Castleton was also helped by five penalties, getting three power play goals back-to-back-to-back, two of which came from Ben Schoeneberger (Vernon, Conn.). TJ Hermans (Chesterfield, Pa.) started the scoring 2:57 in to make it 6-3 and Van Dyk sandwiched his power play goal in between two from Schoeneberger.

Senior Cody Ayers (Colorado Springs, Colo.) put the finishing touches on the night, scoring with just 31 seconds remaining in the contest off a pass from Lindsey Gullett (Wawaneesa, Man.).

The No. 7 Spartans improve to 1-0 in the ECAC Men’s East and 1-0 overall with the victory. They return to action on Saturday for a 4 p.m. matchup with Southern Maine.
