Castleton Football Falls at SUNY-Maritime 56-14

Privateers pile up 441 yards on the ground

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Castleton State College football team had no answer for the powerful ground game of defending Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) champion SUNY-Maritime Saturday afternoon, falling 56-14.

The Privaterers piled up 441 yards on the ground, and rushed for eight scores in the win.

Trailing 28-0 at halftime, Castleton was able to put together a pair of scoring drives in the second half, but could not close the margin.

SUNY-Maritime had 13 different players carry the football, led by Jamie Spanopolous (Franklin Square, N.Y.) who rushed for a game-high 102 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown. Thomas Davis (Westbury, N.Y.) made all three of his carries count, finding the end zone each time. Gary Bigham (Jacksonville, Fla.), Frank Laino (Rockaway, N.Y.), Nicholas Barillaro (Washingtonville, N.Y.) and Joe Guerra (Bronx, N.Y.) rounded out the touchdowns for the Mariners.

Shane Brozowski (Renssealer, N.Y.) threw for 129 yards and two touchdowns in the loss, connecting with Brandon Boyle (Springfield, Vt.) and Zack Waitkus (Stafford Springs, Conn.) for scores.
