CASTLETON - Matt Martin (Poughquag, N.Y.) scored with 4:32
remaining in the second overtime to lead Plattsburgh State to a 3-2 win
over Castleton in non conference men’s soccer action Wednesday evening
at Spartan Stadium.

Martin pounced on a rare Spartan miscue as Castleton failed to clear
away a corner kick, leaving Martin alone on the backside of the goal.
The junior midfielder corralled the loose ball, turned and fired through
a pair of Castleton defenders for the game-winner, ending an
evenly-matched thriller.

Bryce Kaler (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) opened the scoring in the third minute,
heading home a Jacob Ferry (Warwick, R.I.) cross for the early 1-0
advantage.

Plattsburgh found the equalizer in the 21st minute of play as Nick
Parrella (Miller place, N.Y.) scored his first career goal off a Pat
Shaugnessy (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) assist. Shaughnessy played a low cross in
to Parella who one-touched it past the dive of Castleton goalie Nate
Koenneman (Montpelier, Vt.).

Ian Hunter (Ellington, Conn.) netted his first goal of the season two
minutes later to make it 2-1 Spartans, converting a Dillon Zaengle
(Westhampton, Mass.) assist. Zaengle played a free kick in from 25 yards
out to the far post to Hunter who ran onto the pass and one-touched it
home.

The action continued, and with seven minutes remaining in the first
half the crowd was treated to an incredible series. Mike Payne (New
Hartford, N.Y.) played a corner kick in to Steve Zacharczyk (Highland
Mills, N.Y.) who appeared to have a misdirection goal in his future but
Koenneman came out of nowhere to make a diving left handed save. Two
minutes later Zacharczyk was able to net the equalizer on a nifty feed
from Wade Goehle (Miller Place, N.Y.). Goehle settled a clearing attempt
on the right flank and played a lofted pass into Zacharczyk who sniped
it past Koenneman.

Hunter nearly gave the Spartans a lead going into overtime, but his
diving header attempt went clanging off the nearside post as the horn
sounded.

The second half saw no scoring, but plenty more excitement as both
teams had several chances turned away. During the 60th minute Stjepan
Bandov (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) played a perfect through pass forward to
Shaughnessy who went in alone against Koenneman, but the goalie was able
to come out and make a smothering save to preserve the tie.

With 10 minutes left the Spartans had an excellent chance to take the
lead as Dominic Heller (Glenville, N.Y.) corralled a pass 25 yards out,
accelerated through a pair of Cardinal defenders and sent a low-liner in
towards the net that Andy Heighington (Simcoe, Ontario) turned away.

Plattsburgh State held a slight 23-19 edge in shots, while posting
seven corner kicks to Castleton’s six. Heighington made five saves in
the win, while Koenneman stopped six in the loss.

The Spartans, who fall to 2-2-1, open North Atlantic Conference play
Saturday with a 1 p.m. match at Lyndon. Plattsburgh remains perfect at
5-0, and will face non-conference opponent Skidmore on the road Saturday
at 2 p.m.
