Women’s Basketball: Norwich Handles UMaine-Fort Kent, 79-73, To Open Hockenbury Classic

NORTHFIELD – Senior Karissa Doyon (Beecher Falls, Vt.) poured in a game-high 35 points to lead the Norwich University women’s basketball team past UMaine-Fort Kent Friday night, 79-73, in the opening game of the 2011-12 Ed Hockenbury Classic at Andrews Hall.

Freshman Aliah Curry (Windsor, Mass.) added 18 points for the Cadets (2-4), knocking down four three-pointers in the process.

Erika Christensen (23 points) and Jennifer Colpitts (17 points) paced the effort for the 1-4 Bengals. Christensen also pulled down 17 rebounds in recording a double-double.

Junior Jessalyn Sweeney (Stanfordville, N.Y.) rounded out the top scorers for the Maroon and Gold with 11 points. Sophomore Kristin Brown (Williamstown, Vt.) dished out a game-high nine assists.

In the other  game Bates defeated MCLA 87-69 to claim its place in the championship game.

The title clash of the 2011-12 Hockenbury Classic is set to tip tomorrow (Dec. 3) at 1 p.m.
