Four McGlynn 20 points and Matt Glass 19

BURLINGTON – Freshman Four McGlynn netted a game-high 20 points and senior Matt Glass added 19 to lead the Vermont men's basketball team to an 83-69 victory at home over Boston University on Thursday night at Patrick Gym. The Catamounts improve to 7-9 overall and 1-1 in America East action with the victory.
Vermont led by as many as 19 in the contest, as it won its conference home opener for the 11th time in its last 12 tries. Catamount sophomore Brian Voelkel matched a career-high with 16 rebounds and handed out a game-high six assists.
“Great game today by all of our guys, it was just a great team effort. Our bench was really key for us,” said Vermont head coach John Becker. “We beat a good Boston University team at home tonight and I want to thank the crowd, I thought they were great, really into the game and that gave us a boost. We will take this and we have to build off of it. We have a quick turnaround again and have Hartford down there, so we have to enjoy this tonight, but get back to work tomorrow.”
Boston U (4-11, 0-1 America East) used an 11-2 run to take an early 13-8 lead 6:47 in. The Catamounts answered with nine straight to go up 17-13, capped off by a layup from junior Brendan Bald as Vermont would lead for the rest of the game. The Terriers started off only making six of their first 18 attempts as a jumper by Glass would stretch UVM's lead to as many as six at 33-27 with 40 seconds left in the stanza.
A late Patrick Hazel layup cut the Cats' lead to 33-29 at the break, as Glass led the way with 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the floor. Vermont had 10 assists on 13 made baskets in the first half and used a 17-8 scoring edge from its bench.
Leading 35-32 in the second half, the Catamounts used an 8-1 spurt to stretch their lead to 10. Bald hit a 3-pointer in transition, sophomore Sandro Carissimo added a three-point play and classmate Luke Apfeld wrapped it up with a pair of free throws with 16:21 remaining.
Vermont broke the game opening when it extended a seven-point advantage with 11:12 left to 64-49 over the next 2:26 with a 10-2 run, capped off by a 3-pointer from Glass. The Catamounts would lead by double digits the rest of the way.
McGlynn netted 14 of his 20 points in the second half, as he shot 4-for-7 from 3-point range. Glass' 19 were a season-high, as he went 8-for-12 from the floor and added five rebounds. Apfeld also reached double figures by tallying 13 off the bench after converting 9-for-10 from the free throw line.
The Catamounts owned a 42-31 edge on the glass behind Voelkel's performance and went 25-for-31 from the line. Darryl Partin paced BU with 19 points, while Matt Griffin (11) and Travis Robinson (10) also reached double figures.
Vermont returns to action on Sunday when it travels to face Hartford starting at 2 p.m.
