NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Greg Mangano scored 22 points and added 15 rebounds to lead Yale to a 68-52 victory over the Vermont men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Four McGlynn paced Vermont with 16 points, as the loss is the second straight for the Catamounts who fall to 4-4 on the year.
The Bulldogs (5-2) jumped out to an 18-point halftime lead and never looked back. Jeremiah Kreisberg and Austin Morgan each added 14 for Yale, as it shot 47.9 percent from the floor for the game.
“It was a tough game tonight, Yale played very well,” said Vermont head coach John Becker. “For whatever reason we didn't have it from the jump and I have to do a better job getting the guys ready to go. All the credit to Yale, they are a very good team and well coached and they took it to us tonight.”
In the first half the Catamounts scored the opening bucket on a layup by junior Brendan Bald, but Yale netted the next seven straight and never let Vermont closer than five points for the remainder of the frame. The Bulldogs started 7-for-9 from the floor, four of which were 3-pointers, as they made it 20-9 just 6:30 into the contest.
Vermont trailed 30-20 before Yale finished off the half with eight straight points to take a 38-20 lead into the locker room. The Bulldogs shot 54 percent from the floor in the first half and made five of their nine attempts from 3-point range, while the Cats shot only 31 percent. Bald and McGlynn led UVM at the break with seven points each.
Yale started the second half by scoring five of the first seven points to take its biggest lead of the game at 43-22. Trailing 51-30 with 10:23 to go, Vermont used an 8-2 run over a span of 2:49 to cut it to 53-38. A layup by sophomore Luke Apfeld with 5:34 remaining cut it to 55-43, but the Bulldogs' Morgan responded with a 3-pointer on the other end and the Cats would get no closer.
Apfeld finished with nine points and six rebounds, while Bald added nine points as well. Sophomore Clancy Rugg chipped in with a career-high six points off the bench. Yale also outrebounded the Catamounts 39-29 on the afternoon.
The Catamounts return to action on Wednesday when they travel to face No. 23 Saint Louis starting at 8 p.m. (EST).
