BURLINGTON – Sophomore Haley Marks scored twice to lead the University of Vermont women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over New Hampshire in America East action on Thursday afternoon at Centennial Field. The Catamounts trailed 1-0 at the half, but scored three times in less than five minutes in the second frame to improve to 5-7-4 overall and 3-2-1 in league play.
Vermont controlled play early on in the contest, but it was New Hampshire that struck first when Drea Nogueira scored with 53 ticks left in the opening half. The Catamounts failed to clear the ball deep in their end and it bounced right to Nogueira 10 yards out, as she shot high, just putting it underneath the crossbar.
Marks knotted the score with her second tally of the year in the 57th minute of play, as she lofted a shot from outside the box that UNH (3-11-1, 1-4-0 America East) keeper Erica Correa got a piece of, but it snuck through her hands and into the back of the net. Marks picked up her second straight just 3:03 later when she sent a blast that rattled off the bottom half of the crossbar and rattled in to give UVM its first lead of the day.
Junior Midori Eckenstein wrapped up the Catamounts' quick scoring outburst with her third of the season in the 62nd minute. Classmate Jess Herbst put a shot on goal that was saved by Correa, but the rebound trickled right to Eckenstein on the door step and she converted from three yards out to make it 3-1.
The Wildcats cut it to a one-goal game with 17:53 remaining in the contest as Stephanie Gilkenson sent a lead pass in space that Brooke Duchaney gathered and went in all alone on the left side, sneaking one past Catamount goalkeeper Sarah Leiby just inside the far post.
Vermont finished the game with a 25-13 shot advantage, which included a 15-3 edge in the deciding second half. The Cats also held an 8-0 edge in corners, while Leiby earned the win by making seven stops in goal.
UVM returns to action on Sunday when it travels to face Hartford in league action starting at 2 p.m.
NOTES: The win is the first for Vermont against UNH since October 24, 2003 and snaps a nine-game slide against the Wildcats … The Catamounts improved to 5-1-1 at home this year, which are the most victories at Centennial since the 2004 season
