STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Berian Gobeil scored twice, including the game-winning tally in the 84th minute, to lift the Stony Brook Seawolves to a 3-2 victory over visiting Vermont in America East men's soccer action on Friday night.
"We put a lot of pressure on Stony Brook, they had to defend a fair amount and the game could have gone either way," said Vermont head coach Jesse Cormier. "They made it go their way tonight, we have to learn to make it go our way. We need to be a bit smarter and play to our strengths in the end of half and end of game situations. We are still in the hunt in the league standings and we are improving and learning with every match."
Stony Brook took an early 1-0 lead as Gobeil scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 15th minute. Will Casey sent a pass into the penalty area and Gobeil was able to slot a shot to the right side of the net to put the Seawolves on the board.
Vermont answered four minutes later when Joe Losier scored his third goal in as many games to level the score at 1-1. He capitalized on a failed clearing attempt by the Seawolves for his third tally of the year.
Losier gave UVM a 2-1 lead with his second tally of the match and fourth of the season in the 25th minute. Sean Sweeney sent a pass into the penalty box and Losier was able to finish the scoring opportunity with a shot into the left corner.
Stony Brook evened the game for the second time of the half four minutes later. Leonardo Fernandes was able to finish off a loose ball in the penalty box for his fourth goal of the season in the 29th minute.
The two teams entered the break knotted at 2-2.
Gobeil netted the game winner in the 84th minute, finishing off a thru pass from Fernandes to lift the Seawolves to the victory.
Dave Ramada was credited with three saves in the Vermont net, while Stefan Manz had two saves for Stony Brook. The Seawolves held a 21-10 advantage in shots for the game.
The Catamounts fall to 6-5 overall and 1-1 in league play. Stony Book improves to 6-4 and remains unbeaten in America East with a 2-0 mark.
Vermont returns to action on Wednesday (Oct. 12) when it hosts Boston U at 3 p.m. at Centennial Field. The game will be streamed online for free via CatamounTV at UVMathletics.com.
