BURLINGTON, Vt. – Freshman Jesse Scheirer came off the bench in the second half and scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 52nd minute to lift the Vermont Catamounts to a 1-0 victory over visiting Siena.
Scheirer made his first appearance on the Centennial pitch memorable, scoring his first career goal in a Vermont uniform. Salvatore Borea sent a long ball from UVM's defensive third up to the attack and found teammate Juan Peralta. Peralta took a few touches and was able to find Scheirer making a run to the left side of the goal and delivered a good pass. Sheirer collected the ball, beat a Siena defender and was able to hit a strong low show back across the goal and past the diving Siena goalkeeper for the tally.
The Saints put some late pressure on the Catamount defense, hitting the cross bar twice in the final 50 minutes, but could not find the equalizer.
The Catamounts improve to 4-1-0 overall and post their fourth shutout victory of the season. Siena falls to 2-4-0 on the year.
UVM returns to action on Sunday (Sept. 18) when it hosts Harvard at 1 p.m. at Centennial Field to close out a four-game homestand. The game will be streamed online for free via CatamounTV at UVMathletics.com
