CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Sophomore goaltender Roxanne Douville made 61 saves Friday afternoon at Kelley Rink as Vermont fell to No. 4 Boston College 2-0 in Hockey East play.
The Eagles came out very strong in the opening period. Boston College outshot Vermont 17-4 but Douville turned aside all 17 shots to take the teams into the intermission scoreless.
Danielle Welch opened the scoring 13:20 into the second period with her 10th goal of the season. A Meagan Mangene shot in the slot was deflected high in the air by a Vermont defenseman, the puck fell in behind Douville on the far post and Welch tapped it into the empty net to give the Eagles the lead.
Vermont had their chance to equalize early in the third period when Boston College's Taylor Wasylk was given a major penalty for contact to the head. During the ensuing power play Kailey Nash rang a point shot off the post and the Catamounts just missed stashing a bouncing puck into an empty net. Vermont was credited with three shots on the power play but they could not convert.
A little over two minutes after the Vermont power play Ashley Motherwell gave the Eagles a two-goal cushion with her 12th goal of the season. Motherwell converted a rebound opportunity off a Mary Restuccia shot on the power play.
Douville's 61 saves were a personal best, she had made 43 saves twice before for the Catamounts. Her 61 saves was just five off the team record of 66 set by Kami Cote Oct. 10, 2003 at Wisconsin.
BC goaltender Corrine Boyles made 20 saves for her 22nd win and sixth shutout of the season.
The win moves Boston College to 22-8-3 overall and 14-4-2 in Hockey East play. The loss drops Vermont to 4-21-6 and 3-15-2 in league play. With Connecticut and New Hampshire inactive today the Catamounts still trail UNH by two points for the final Hockey East playoff spot.
NOTES: Erin Wente, Emily Walsh, and Brittany Zuback were tied for the team lead with six faceoff wins Friday afternoon … Roxanne Douville's 26 saves in the third period matched or exceeded her overall total in 20 of her 45 career starts.
