Women's Hockey: Two First Period Goals Lead Maine Past Vermont

Catamounts still trail New Hampshire by two points for the final Hockey East playoff spot

ORONO, Maine – Dawn Sullivan and Brittany Dougherty scored first period goals to lead Maine to a 3-0 win over Vermont Sunday afternoon in Hockey East action at Alfond Arena.
 
The Black Bears opened the scoring 6:09 into the first period. Sullivan beat Vermont goaltender Roxanne Douville for her fifth goal of the season. Entering action on Sunday the Black Bears were 8-2-2 when scoring first.
 
Dougherty scored her team leading 15th goal of the season to push the Black Bears lead to 2-0 at the 11:45 mark. Danielle Ward and Jessica Hall were credited with assists on the play.
 
The Catamounts comeback attempt was stymied by Maine goaltender Brittany Ott. Ott made 25 saves, earning her seventh career shutout, and third of the season. Douville made 28 saves on the night for Vermont.
 
The win moves Maine to 15-8-6 overall and 9-6-2 in Hockey East play. The loss drops Vermont to 4-18-6 and 3-12-2 in league play. The Catamounts still trail New Hampshire by two points for the final Hockey East playoff spot.
