UNH wins 4-2 at Whittemore Center

DURHAM - Junior forward Kristina Lavoie registered her first career hat trick to lead New Hampshire to a 4-2 win against Vermont on Saturday afternoon at the Whittemore Center in Hockey East action.
Lavoie scored her first of the afternoon 3:23 into the first period to give the Wildcats an early lead. New Hampshire outshot Vermont 13-4 in the first twenty minutes. Heather Kashman and Lavoie scored two goals 35 seconds apart in the final minute of the first period to give New Hampshire a 3-0 lead heading into the intermission.
Six minutes into the second period Lavoie picked up her third goal of the game to give the Wildcats a four-goal cushion. Kristine Horn picked up her second assist of the game on Lavoie's hat trick tally.
Down four the Vermont offense got one back two minutes later. Amanda Pelkey scored her fourth goal of the season to get the Catamounts on the board. Pelkey had a goal and an assist against New Hampshire on Nov. 3. Emily Walsh and Erin Wente were credited with assists on the play.
Pelkey struck again for Vermont with just 11 seconds left in the second period. Megan Bergland picked her fourth point of the season with an assist on the play. Saturday was Pelkey's first multi-goal game as a Catamount.
Vermont had four power play chances but they couldn't get any closer to the Wildcats, who even the season series between the two teams at 1-1-0.
New Hampshire goaltender Lindsay Minton made 19 saves to earn her 5th win of the season. Roxanne Douville made 34 saves for the Catamounts.
Vermont returns to action as they host the Wildcats on Sunday Jan. 29 (2 p.m.) in their annual Hockey East Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer game.
In recognition of the ongoing fight against cancer, the Catamounts will be wearing special edition “pink” jerseys during the game.
A silent auction will be held during the game, where fans can win a game worn “pink” jersey. The bidding will close 10 minutes after the conclusion of the game.

NOTES: Amanda Pelkey is now tied for the team lead in scoring with 12 points this season … Kristina Lavoie was the third opponent in a row to register a hat trick against the Catamounts … Vermont is 2-1-0 in its last three meetings with the Wildcats at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
