Women's Hockey: Coyne Hat Trick Leads Huskies Past Vermont

BOSTON, MA. – Northeastern freshman Kendall Coyne recorded her first career hat trick as the Huskies defeated Vermont 5-1 in Hockey East action Sunday afternoon at Matthews Arena.
 
Coyne opened the scoring for the Huskies three minutes into the first. She collected a puck behind the Vermont net and beat Kelci Lanthier to the post on a quick wrap around for her 19th goal of the season.
 
The Catamounts equalized 7:28 into the second period with a power play goal. A Megan Dalbec point shot was redirected by Chelsea Rapin in front past Northeastern goaltender Florence Schelling. Rapin, a senior captain, now leads the Catamounts in scoring with six goals and six assists for 12 points this season.
 
Just over two minutes later Coyne scored the game-winner on a great individual rush. She entered the Vermont zone put a quick shot on Lanthier and was able to corral her own rebound and put it in for her second of the night.
 
The Huskies pushed their lead to 4-1 after the second period with Coyne's hat trick goal and a Rachel Llanes power play marker just 98 seconds apart.
 
Casey Pickett scored her 15th goal of the season 7:40 into the third period to put the game away for the Huskies. Coyne collected her fourth point of the night with an assist on the play.
 
Schelling made 21 saves to earn her 15th win of the season. Lanthier made 26 saves for Vermont. Roxanne Douville who replaced Lanthier in the third period made eight saves.
 
The Huskies out shot Vermont 38-22. The win moves Northeastern to 17-5-2 overall and 11-2-2 in Hockey East play while Vermont drops to 3-16-6 and 2-9-2 in league play.
 
Vermont returns to action next weekend as they face New Hampshire in a home-and-home two-game set. The Catamounts host the Wildcats on Sunday Jan. 29 (2 p.m.) in their annual Hockey East Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer game.
In recognition of the ongoing fight against cancer, the Catamounts will be wearing special edition “pink” jerseys during the game.

A silent auction will be held during the game, where fans can win a game worn “pink” jersey.  The bidding will close 10 minutes after the conclusion of the game.
