BOSTON, MA. – Jenn Wakefield registered a hat trick and added three assists to lead Boston U to a 6-2 win against Vermont on Saturday afternoon at Walter Brown Arena.
The Terriers came out and scored two early goals in the first period. Wakefield scored her 13th goal of the season 93 seconds into the game. Jill Cardella's sixth goal of the season added to the Boston U lead at the 3:03 mark.
The Catamounts cut into their deficit late in the first period. Danielle Rancourt intercepted a pass at the top of the zone and sent a shot past Boston U goaltender Kerrin Sperry for her first collegiate goal unassisted at the 17:09 mark. Rancourt is the 10th Catamount this season to score her first career goal.
Vermont tied the game 5:21 into the second period on the power play. Klara Myren retrieved a loose puck and skated into the Boston zone, at the right faceoff dot she centered a pass to Chelsea Rapin, who redirected it past Sperry for her fifth goal of the season.
Wakefield regained the lead for the Terriers on a power play of their own. Wakefield one-timed a shot from the right circle beating Vermont goaltender Roxanne Douville in what would prove to be the game winner 11:18 into the second period.
Just over a minute later the Terriers struck again as freshman forward Kayla Tutino scored her 13th goal of the season. Wakefield won a faceoff just outside the Vermont zone to Tutino, she dangled past a Vermont defenseman and beat Douville with a backhander just inside the left post.
The Terriers added two more insurance goals in the third period to snap their three-game Hockey East losing streak. Isabel Menard's power play goal and Wakefield's third goal of the night put the game out of reach for Vermont.
Sperry made 20 saves to earn her ninth win of the season, Douville made 38 saves for Vermont.
The Terriers out shot Vermont 44-22. The win moves Boston U to 12-12-1 overall and 7-7-0 in Hockey East play while Vermont drops to 3-14-6 and 2-8-2 in league play.
Vermont returns to action tomorrow as they face No. 7 Northeastern at 2 p.m.
NOTES: The Catamounts wore “MW” decals on their helmets to honor junior captain Erin Wente's father, Michael Wente, who passed away earlier this week.
